With an academic background in theater, Sande first wrote plays and short stories, and a number of her works have been performed on the campuses of Georgia State University, DeKalb College, and Emory University. Recently two of her screenplays received "honorable mention" in international competitions, and in 1999, her children's story, New World Flying Squirrel, received "honorable mention" in the annual competition sponsored by Writer's Digest. While watching Christmas specials on television ten years ago with her two young sons, Sande realized there were not a lot of Christmas stories involving a train. Since everyone in her family is an avid train lover, Sande decided to write her own story. Tinker's Christmas is the result of that idea. Within the story is the need to believe, and within herself Sande recognized the importance of belief in her own life--not just belief in ourselves and our abilities, but the need to believe in each other, and most importantly the need to believe in something greater, better than ourselves. From the vantage point of age, Sande can look back at the most important people in her life as being the ones who believed in her. Tinker's Christmas brings that belief together to be shared in a story that will touch children and adults alike. Sande makes her home in Griffin, Georgia with her architect husband, Paul, and her two boys, Justin and Brad, who inspired the story. Once when asked about his mom's writing, Brad responded, "She doesn't march to the beat of a different drummer; her drummer's not even in the band." Like Tinker, we all may have to march to the beat of our own drum, but hopefully again like Tinker, our individual beats will eventually come together as one. |
